IKTA Certification

Become a recognised Knotentanz dancer or certified instructor. The IKTA Figurenkatalog defines three licence levels — C, B, and A — each building on the last.

The Three Licence Levels

C-Lizenz

Foundation

The entry-level certification. Confirms that the dancer masters the basic Figurenkatalog and can participate confidently in any IKTA social ball.

Requirements: Completion of a Beginners Course or equivalent, practical examination before an IKTA examiner.

Fee: €45 examination fee

B-Lizenz

Intermediate

The intermediate level. Expands the Figurenkatalog significantly and introduces leading roles, floor craft, and partnered improvisation within the structured sequences.

Requirements: Valid C-Lizenz, min. 6 months regular practice, written theory examination + practical exam.

Fee: €75 examination fee

A-Lizenz

Master / Instructor

The highest personal licence — and the prerequisite for becoming an IKTA-certified instructor. Holders have mastered the full Figurenkatalog and demonstrate the ability to lead and teach others.

Figurenkatalog A: Complete catalogue of 48 Figuren across all three levels, plus 6 A-exclusive advanced sequences.

Requirements: Valid B-Lizenz, min. 12 months further practice, full written theory exam, teaching practicum (2 observed classes), oral examination before the IKTA board.

Fee: €120 examination fee

How to Get Certified

1 · Prepare

Take a course or workshops at an IKTA-affiliated location. Your instructor will track your progress and advise when you are ready to register for an examination.

2 · Register

Submit your registration form and examination fee at least 4 weeks before the next examination date. Examination sessions are held three times a year across Germany, Austria, and the Netherlands.

3 · Examine & Receive

Pass the practical (and for B/A: written) examination before an IKTA examiner. Certificates are issued within two weeks. Your licence is valid for 3 years and renewable through continued practice.
